Project Description:
RR Donnelley (RRD) has used cognitive computing technology to create a freight cost engine for its logistics business that is first in the industry. The model, which predicts truckload rates in real time — 7.5x more accurately than the industry average — continues to increase RRD's win rate for truckload bids and business revenue. The rate engine is built on a machine learning platform to leverage historical data for a complex variable, forward-looking model. The system is continually updated with new data, improving its reliability and accuracy each time it's refreshed. The model has disrupted and redefined the industry's standards for rate modeling. In December 2016, the first month of deployment, the company saw a 4 percent increase in its overall truckload win rate as compared to the next highest win rate that year, which was 33 percent in August 2016. The company projects that in 2017 its truckload brokerage business will grow from $4 million to $16 million, which is a $12 million (2 percent) increase in revenue against a $600 million business.
