2018 Winner Profile

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Worldwide Campus

Project Description:
The virtual crash investigation and aerial robotics labs at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's worldwide campus provides an interactive environment for simulated aircraft accident investigation, designing and building drones and test flight capabilities. Embry-Riddle's Worldwide Campus has 150 classrooms around the world and extensive online learning for over 26,000 students. Historically, similar lab spaces have been limited to traditional university settings and physical spaces. However, the university's virtual lab, built on a gaming engine, enhances courses with simulations of real-life scenarios and interactions. The virtual lab environment provides an opportunity to offer any lab space online and eliminates physical restrictions. The Crash Lab enables students to visualize the complexities of the accident investigation process from a multidimensional standpoint rather than just reading about procedures. The flexibility of the Crash Lab, which has increased interest in the field of aircraft investigation, gives student hands-on control of techniques and tools used in air safety investigations.
