2018 Winner Profile

International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children

Project Description:
The International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC) maintains a database of missing child case data from 27 countries across five continents as part of its Global Missing Children's Network (GMCN) initiative. While this system has been vital and effective, it's not doing enough. The vision of the organization's CIO was to build technology that acted like a parent of a missing child, constantly searching for clues. Subsequently, Amazon Web Services partnered with ICMEC to build an artificial intelligence engine to automate the search for missing children across the Internet. The technology is designed to automate and match active missing child case data against an infinite number of data sources from across the Internet but focusing on two primary areas: images sourced from social media and the open and dark webs; and law enforcement arrest data from around the world. The ICMEC is taking a global view of missing child cases and radically changing the way that searches are conducted and how technology is used to find children.
