2019 Winner Profile

Tallahassee-Leon County GIS

Project Description:
With real-time disaster data integrated into mapping applications, dashboards, and in-the-field resources, first responders, nonprofits, and citizens could better face Hurricane Michael, the largest and most destructive hurricane in Leon County's history. The category-5 storm hit Florida's coast in October 2018. This project involves a suite of tools for internal and external uses across all phases of a disaster, ranging from damage assessments and debris collection, to close integration with the activities at the Emergency Operations Center. Staffers could track open/close status and capacity for each shelter, and administrators could make decisions and monitor status of several vital components of the storm response in real time. Most important, emergency management staffers received direct feedback from search and rescue teams, fire department staffers, and law enforcement personnel that the maps and apps helped them save lives during the storm.
