2019 Winner Profile

King County, Washington

Project Description:
After an overwhelmed treatment plant accidentally discharged millions of gallons of sewage into the Puget Sound during a major storm in 2017, the county reassessed how to manage its wastewater conveyance. The county created a 3D imaging platform of all the pipes, pumps and filters that move wastewater from homes to treatment plants. Staff can adjust flow rates, critical during storms to protect sensitive marine environments. Employees can use mobile devices in the field to view the wastewater system, to precisely understand where a conveyance system lies within a community. The system has reduced the cost of training and engineers can better assess homes and businesses impacted by problems or closures.
