Dell, famous for its direct-to-consumer sales model leveraging the Web, has signed an agreement with Costco to put older model desktops and laptops on the discount chain’s shelves, as reported in today’s Wall Street Journal.

But Dell spokesman Mike Maher says Dell is not experimenting with a return to retail-sales outlets, which it left in the early 1990s in favor of direct telephone and Web sales.

However, Dell’s U.S. consumer business has been struggling lately, and it’s recently laid off about 1,000 American employees.

A model is just a model, after all, but a sale is a sale.
